Former "Sweetie Pie's" star sentenced for nephew's killing in Hollywood

Reality TV star and former “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s” actor, James Timothy Norman, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for his role in the murder of his 18-year-old nephew, Andre Montgomery. According to reports, Norman had taken out a $450,000 life insurance policy on Montgomery in 2014, and in 2016, he conspired with his co-defendant to stage a robbery and murder Montgomery in order to cash in on the insurance policy. Norman's co-defendant was also sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Norman starred in the reality show “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s” alongside his mother, Robbie Montgomery, which focused on their family-owned soul food restaurant in St. Louis. The show aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) for five seasons, from 2011 to 2017.

Norman was found guilty in November 2020 of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, and he was sentenced on March 3, 2023. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that showed Norman had communicated with his co-defendant, who was a professional exotic dancer and model, about carrying out the murder-for-hire scheme. Montgomery was shot and killed in his own apartment in St. Louis in 2016.

In a statement, Montgomery's family said, “We are thankful that justice has been served for Andre and we pray that his memory will be a blessing for our family and for all of those whose lives he touched.”

Norman's defense team argued that he had no motive to kill his nephew, and that he was being framed by his co-defendant. However, the prosecution presented evidence that showed Norman was deeply in debt and had taken out the life insurance policy on his nephew just four days before the murder.

The case gained national attention due to Norman's role on the popular reality show, as well as the shocking details of the murder-for-hire plot. The case also shed light on the issue of insurance fraud, and the potential for greed to drive people to commit heinous crimes.

Norman's sentencing marks the end of a years-long legal battle that has left many in the entertainment industry and beyond shocked and saddened. His role on “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s” had made him a beloved figure in the reality TV world, and his conviction has rocked the industry. However, the sentencing also represents a sense of closure and justice for Montgomery's family, who have been grieving the loss of their loved one for years.
